Because you need to... you just do. You need to learn how to play guitar chords because they are the foundation of every song you'll ever play, and knowing the chords will help you to be a better all around guitar player. It'll help you play lead guitar, jam with other players, and give you a better feel for the fretboard. It took me a while before I figured that out. I just wanted to noodle around playing lead and being a guitar god and not worry about where the notes I was playing came from. Cool idea but eventually curiosity got the best of me and I wanted more. Hopefully you will to.

The beauty of it is that you only have to learn a few chords. Once you learn those you can move them all over the neck of your guitar and you'll be playing different chords automatically. It really isn't that hard. Even I did it. Kicking and screaming nearly all the way I know, but I did it, and I understand more now about where my solos come from and what notes to concentrate on when I'm jamming. Who would've thought that learning how to play guitar chords would have come in so handy?

It takes practice though... but the great thing about the guitar is that practicing is fun. It's just playing the guitar. How cool is that.

Now get out there and learn how to play guitar chords and you'll improve every part of your guitar playing. Try it and see.
